As the march toward the launch of the next-gen consoles creeps forward, Microsoft has provided insight into the Xbox One’s support for gameplay video capture kits. In a statement issued today, Microsoft confirmed that the system will allow players to capture footage over HDMI without the hinderance HDCP (High-Bandwidth Copyright Protection), maintaining the capacity to record gameplay for machinima videos, commentaries, and highlight reels.
“Xbox One will support gameplay footage capture just as it works on Xbox 360,” a Microsoft representative said.
Up until now, the next-generation fate of devices like the Elgato Game Capture HD and Roxio Game Capture HD Pro was unknown. With Microsoft adopting a new proprietary format for chat communication and eliminating support for component output, it was unclear if Microsoft would be implementing restrictions for video capture.
The question now becomes: will the PlayStation 4 also permit the use of capture devices? The PlayStation 3 blocked the use of gameplay capture over HDMI, but the system’s support for component connections allowed players allowed users to work around the DRM. We’ve reached out to Sony for comment and will update the story.
